The designers make their money by designing clothes for people just like you.
They put their names all over them, charge crazy amounts of money, and sell them
to the masses. When you purchase designer clothing – you become one of the
masses. How does it feel to be a walking billboard? The same designer that came
up with the idea for the crazy outfit you’re wearing is laughing all the way to
the bank. By charging you to wear his designs, he saves a ton of money on
advertising. You PAY for the privilege of advertising for him. Don’t you feel
smart? It doesn’t matter – you look good!
While you’re spending your hard earned money to advertise for famous designers,
you’re missing out on the things you could be doing. Maybe you want to learn
French, or study fashion design yourself. Maybe you want a new car, or more
luxuries in your life. But somehow, you never find the money, or you never find
the time. By turning off the shopping machine, you can find both! How much did
those fancy pointy shoes we talked about cost you? If you’d walked away from
them, you could have had one of the life enriching experiences you really want.
Instead of filling up your closet, maybe it’s time to try expanding your mind.
Those brain cells you’ve been wasting on shopping will thank you, and so will
your wallet!
Trends come and go, and as a fashionista, you have two options. Option one
(generally popular) is to throw your time and money after the newest, hottest,
look on the market. You’re in style, you look good, and that makes you happy. If
this continues to be your choice (although I think it’s a poor one), rest
assured that you’ll always be up to the minute with the newest trend. Keep in
mind, however, that mullets, legwarmers, and stretch pants used to be the
“newest trend” – and they look pretty silly now. Take the time to assess your
look, removed from what the media tells you. Does it flatter you? Or will it be
something that we all laugh at 5 years or 5 minutes from now?
Your second option is to continue to invest in clothing, but choose timeless
pieces. Classic separates are a foundation of a great looking wardrobe. Choose a
few colors that work for you, and build your wardrobe around them. If, like an
addict, you can’t remove yourself from the hot new fashion trend, incorporate
smaller accessories into your wardrobe, as well. By doing so, you don’t have to
take ALL your clothes to the thrift store every season – just a few of them.
Then, there’s always the logical option – step away from the fashion magazines.
You probably won’t choose to do this – quitting any addiction is painful. You’ve
probably got enough clothing to outfit a third world country. You could always
just – stop – shopping! Wear what you have, until it doesn’t fit or wears out.
People survived for years with only two or three outfits, until the fashion
money machine came along. I know it’s hard to believe, but I myself only own two
pairs of jeans. I haven’t died (And they’re not even French!) In fact, I’m quite
comfortable with my lack of fusion – my life is enhanced by it! I stepped off
the fusion treadmill several years ago, and never looked back. And even better –
I survived!
